Legislative Representation
Those elected to the Michigan legislature and the office of the Governor profoundly influence your work environment. Your ultimate boss is not someone sitting in a correctional facility but rather the person who sits in the Governor’s chair.
MCO’s legislative division helps members improve their work conditions and personal lives by protecting the benefits we’ve fought for and supporting candidates for public office who support worker’s rights, pension protection, and the fight against privatization of our jobs.
In essence, the legislative arm of MCO reviews all potential legislation that may have an effect on prisons and the work life of correctional and forensic officers.
Crisis Fund
Being a member of MCO means you are always surrounded by people who understand your needs and the tough job you perform every day. Sometimes, our members fall on hard times and to help in those times, the Crisis Fund was created.
The MCO Crisis Fund is available to members who have experienced a unique life crisis and is intended to provide additional financial support when insurances and other support systems prove inadequate. From devastating fires to a loved one battling cancer, the crisis fund averages $15,000 in yearly donations.
Retirement Recognition
Being a corrections or forensic officer takes bravery, strength and spirit. We know, because we are corrections and forensic officers ourselves. We also know that sticking with this profession until retirement age is a real achievement. That’s why we recognize retiring members with special pins and a shadow box.
Memorial Bible
Losing a loved one is the most difficult situation any of us face. MCO understands a member’s grief in such sorrowful times. To help ease the pain and honor the memory of a loved one, MCO offers a Bible or Quran to each member who loses an immediate family member.
Scholarships
As a member of MCO, your children may apply to two college scholarship programs:
MCO Scholarships – MCO offers 20 scholarships of $750 each to children of MCO members entering into or already in college.
Union Plus Scholarships –Since 1992, the Union Plus Scholarship Program has awarded more than $3.2 million to students of working families who want to begin or continue their post-secondary education.
The Union Plus Scholarship Program is offered through the Union Plus Education Foundation. Scholarships amounts range from $500 to $4,000.
