12/21/2024 – Corrections Officer injured during prisoner assault at Baraga Correctional Facility (AMF)
Category V Assault. at approx 1113 hrs, Officer A was monitoring prisoners on their work detail. Officer A observed Prisoner A passing unknown items through the upper food slot while he was passing food trays. Officer A ordered Prisoner A to go to the commons area. Officer A conducted a pat down search on Prisoner A, finding more food items. Prisoner A became threatening towards Officer A. Officer A order Prisoner A to go lock up. Officer A started to walk away from Prisoner A, when Prisoner A approached Officer A from behind, striking him twice with closed fist blows to the back of his head. Officer B responded and deployed both bays on his ECD. Responding staff assisted in gaining control and applying restraints on Prisoner A.
Prisoner A was escorted and secured in cell 4-112. Officer A was transported to Baraga County Memorial Hospital to be medically assessed from injuries sustained during the assault. Officer A returned back to the facility during shift.
The Wellness Unit was notified at 1742 last evening.
I spoke with Officer A and he is doing well. He had some swelling on his right ear/jaw area, but is in good spirits. He is cleared to be back to work, full duty, on 12/26. He stated that he’s thankful of his coworkers fast response time.
The case will be referred to the MSP for prosecution. JPays and phones are being looked into, however we believe this is an isolated incident.
