12/11/2024 – Corrections Officer stabbed in the head during prisoner assault at Marquette Branch Prison (MBP)
At 0904 hours while G-Block (Level V GP) yard was coming in, prisoner A, G-11, approached the Officer’s Desk where CO A was standing. Prisoner A was asking CO A where Sgt. B was. When prisoner A received knowledge that Sgt. B wasn’t around, he pulled a weapon ( 6 inch by 1 inch piece of melted plastic sharpened to a point with cloth handle) from his jacket pocket and began stabbing CO A in the head multiple times. There were no other prisoners in the immediate area before the assault.
Officer A placed prisoner A on a desk trying to secure him and obtained a shoulder injury while doing so. Prisoner B was in the area and will be receiving a Failure to Disperse misconduct. We are investigating if prisoner B had more involvement. Emergency Medical Services were activated, and Officer A has been taken to Upper Peninsula Health Systems Marquette by ambulance. CO A was ambulatory and speaking when he left. Officer A returned to the facility. He received 5 staples in his head and will make a follow up appointment with Orthopedics for his shoulder. He did have an x-ray on his shoulder at the ER. No broken bones but possible slight tear in the rotator cuff.
Officer A’s emergency contact was notified. MSP was notified. MDOC Intel was notified as well as Wellness Unit.
A request for transfer for prisoner A is being completed.
A request for transfer for prisoner B is being completed. It’s believed that B may have been involved with orchestrating the assault, however, there is no evidence to tie him to this incident.
Reportedly, it is believed the order was for Sgt. B and Officer A was targeted due to Sgt B’S absence. The possible reason for Sgt B as target is he simply does his job and enforces rules.
The facility will continue to work with Intel in determining if prisoner B was connected to this event.
