10/24/2024 – Corrections Officer struck in the head by a prisoner at Charles E. Egeler Reception & Guidance Center (RGC)
At 1302 hours, prisoner A walked from 1st Gallery to Base and stood by the Officer’s Station. Officer A gave a direct order to prisoner A to “go find your door.” Prisoner A did not give a response but rather walked over to the prisoner phones before returning to the Officer’s desk. Prisoner A began striking CO A in the head and upper torso area with a closed fist. CO A fell from the Officer’s chair. As Officer A tried to evade, prisoner A chased, throwing closed fist strikes at CO A’S head and torso.
CO B responded and gave verbal orders to stop and displayed his ECD. Prisoner A complied and was placed wrist restraints on prisoner A without further incident.
Officer A was transported to Henry Ford Occupational Health by Lt. Larson. CO A was medically treated, with noted swelling and tenderness to the lower lip. Officer A was authorized a to return to work; returned to the facility at 1522 hours with no restrictions; and has a follow up assessment on 10/29/24.
Prisoner A was escorted to DWHC urgent care and assessed. Prisoner was cleared for SMHU placement. Prisoner A declined to provide a statement.
Currently, motive is not known.
