7/4/24 – Staff Assault – Baraga Correctional Facility

Today at 1126 hours two prisoners in Level V General Population began assaulting another prisoner.  Staff on the scene and responding were seriously assaulted by the prisoners as they turned on staff and began to hit and kick them making statements like; get off the rock and they run things.

Two Officers were taken to the hospital. Officer A has returned to the facility with preliminary reports that CO A has lacerations to the face and head.  Officer B is still at the hospital with injuries unknown at this time.

The MDOC Wellness Team has been contacted.

We are not aware the reason for the initial prisoner assault and the staff assaults were due to prisoners retaliating on them as they attempted to stop the assault.  

The facility is secured at this time.

Officers A and B were transported to Baraga County Memorial Hospital by Corrections Officer C at approximately 11:45 hours via state vehicle. Officers A and B were medically assessed and treated by Attending Physician D.
