6/30/24 – Staff Assault – Chippewa Correctional Facility
A cell extraction team was assembled for Prisoner 1. Prisoner 1 was involved in an in cell fight with his bunkmate Prisoner 2 . Prisoner 2 was removed from the cell however Prisoner 1 refused to come to the door to be restrained and began to threaten staff.
At 1704 ADW A authorized the use of chemical agent. The cell extraction team was assembled outside cell R-141/142 at 1731 hours.
2 doses of chemical agent were administered and at no time did Prisoner 1 comply with staff direction to come to the door to be restrained.
At 1733 hours the team breached the cell, Prisoner 1 began to swing at staff with a prisoner made weapon, striking Officer B in the groin area and Sgt C in the left hand.
Staff restrained Prisoner 1 and recovered the weapon, which was photographed and placed in MSP locker #5. Prisoner 1 was escorted to the Steamboat center intake module in the transportation chair with no further incident. Prisoner 1 was given a decontamination shower, refused to be seen by healthcare and placed in S-223 pending multiple misconducts.
Sgt. C and Officer B were seen at MyMichigan Medical Center Sault for injuries received during the cell extraction. They returned at 2025, both with superficial wounds.
The cell was searched, and no additional contraband was discovered.
The origin of the weapon is unknown at this time.
Neither of the prisoners appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The inspector’s office will forward the matter to MSP for prosecution.
Phones and JPays will be reviewed.
After reviewing the injuries to staff, the critical will be lowered to a Category V, not a Category I as originally thought.
The names of the staff involved will be forwarded to the Wellness Unit.
