Celebrating your dedication during National Correctional Officers Week
For the past four decades, Michigan Corrections Organization has requested a proclamation from the Governor of the State of Michigan to recognize the first full week of May (Sunday – Saturday) as Correctional Officers Week in Michigan. MCO’s advocacy and messaging about corrections staff has always reflected pride, compassion and appreciation.
This year, we celebrate Correctional Officers Week May 5-11. Corrections officers play a vital role in criminal justice and exemplify professionalism and integrity. We honor you this week to thank you for all that you do at work and in your community.
If you’re a correctional officer, know that it’s up to us to tell our stories, recognize our achievements, support one another and shine a positive light on our profession. So often, we are portrayed negatively by the media and Hollywood. Now is the time for us to change that narrative.
If you’re a member of the public, know that correctional officers are an indispensable part of law enforcement. They keep our communities safe. Corrections staff might be hidden behind prison walls, but when their shift is over, they are a visible force for good in their communities. Whether they’re coaching little league sports, assisting after a car accident, or working at a food pantry, corrections staff volunteer their time to serve and improve communities.
It’s worth noting that MCO advocated in Washington, D.C. in the 1980s, playing a key role in ushering in National Correctional Officers Week and making sure our brothers and sisters around the country are recognized for the work they do.
While the official state proclamation hangs year round at the MCO Central Office in Lansing, we encourage each chapter to hang, print or share the attached proclamation with their entire membership.
With deepest respect and admiration, thank you for all you do.
