10/4/2024 – Corrections Officer at Marquette Branch Prison (MBP) severely injured, requiring surgery.
At approximately 0712 hours, Corrections Officer A (per institutional video) reached his right hand into cell D-12 to retrieve prisoner A’s breakfast tray when the officer felt blood dripping from his right hand. Officer A removed his hand from the cell and observed bright red blood dripping from a slice across the first 2 knuckles of his right hand. Officer A reported this incident to control center and reported to the Brooks Center to see facility healthcare staff. Inspector B escorted Officer A to Upper Peninsula Health Care Emergency Department (UPHSM ED) at 0720 hours.
CET assembled at the front of cell D-12 at 0835 hours. Prisoner was removed from cell without force by the CET. Prisoner was escorted via Emergency Restraint Chair (ERC) to observation cell, Q3 where he was secured in ICSSR at 0848 hours.
Officer A returned to the facility from UPHSM ED. Due to the cut on his hand, it will be necessary for CO A to have surgery on his hand.
Motive may be that prisoner A claimed that CO A did not give him a piece of breakfast cake of which CO A denies.
Transfer of prisoner A is being requested.
