10/25/2024 – Corrections Officer struck in the head by a prisoner at Chippewa Correctional Facility (URF)

At 1317 hours, Sergeant A and Officers B, C, and D reported to Level IV Round Unit cell 445/446 to restraint Prisoner A who had earlier threatened CO E. 

Sergeant A and Officer B gave Prisoner A loud verbal orders to turn around and be restrained.  Officer D cracked the cell door open when Prisoner A began to deliver close fist punches to the head and upper body area of Officer B, striking him in the right eye. 

Cell door was closed, and staff called for additional staff to step out to Round Unit with the transport chair and leg restraints.  Staff placed hand restraints on Prisoner A and placed prisoner in the Transport Chair and securing Prisoner A to safely be transported to Steamboat Unit.  Leg restraints were placed on Prisoner A and prisoner was transported to Steamboat Intake module where he was removed from the transport chair. 

Prisoner A complied with orders and conducted a routine strip search.  Prisoner A refused medical treatment to RN F and did not report injuries. 

Officer B was transported to MMC Sault ER to be assessed and was cleared by the ER Provider. 

Prisoner A was transferred.

MSP will be contacted by the inspectors’ office.
