7/7/24 – Staff Assault – Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility

At 1102 hours, prisoner 1 was being issued his lunch tray from the food cart, when he threw the tray at Officer A, who was standing adjacent the food cart. The tray struck Officer A. Prisoner 1 then began to strike Officer A about the face/head. Prisoner 1 was taken to the floor and additional staff arrived. Several staff reported prisoner 1 continued to resist and was drive stunned.

Staff placed the prisoner into handcuff restraints. Prisoner 1 was escorted from HU 4 to the entrance to temporary segregation. While in the hallway, prisoner 1 was placed back on the floor. Prisoner 1 was then taken to temporary segregation. Unit 4 was secured.

Officer A was sent to Ionia Sparrow where he was treated and released. He remains off work under concussion protocol until a follow up visit.

Prisoner 1 was evaluated by facility Health Care; and then sent to Ionia Sparrow for injuries to his right eye and left hand.  Prisoner 1 was treated and discharged. Prisoner 1 was transferred.

OMNI shows this prisoner transferred to IBC from MRF on 06/18/24; was released from segregation at IBC on 07/03/24.   

Warden B reported to the facility.

Preliminary information was prisoner 1 stated he had done this as he had a debt and needed to lock up.

IBC is preparing the critical incident, misconduct, the Michigan State Police referral, and RFI for formal investigation.
