Join us on Facebook and Twitter!

MCO is moving forward with our goals to create a better informed and stronger union... and a part of that means moving into new areas such as facebook and twitter!  If you're already on facebook, you can find us by typing "Michigan Corrections Organization" in the search box.  If you're already on twitter, then you'll find us under "mcoreports".

For those of you who are not familiar with facebook and twitter, then here's a few tips and pointers.

Visit www.facebook.com to create a profile.  This can contain only the most basic information about yourself until you become more familiar with the tool.  Then, like many of us, you'll likely be posting photos, links to stories, and status updates daily!  When you have a profile on facebook, only those people that ask to be your friend and you "approve" will be able to see your personal information. Thus, you have complete control over who sees what you put on facebook.  Then, simply search for your friends, interests, organizations, causes and more in the Search box to start making connections.  MCO will be using our facebook page to share links to news stories that mention MCO or Corrections, to announce upcoming facility visits/tours/events and much, much more.  You can sign up to be a fan of MCO by searching for "Michigan Corrections Organization".

Visit www.twitter.com to sign up.  Twitter is similar to facebook in that you create a basic profile, and then choose to "follow" other people, organizations, news media and more.  And conversely, other's can choose to follow you.  However, these "tweets" (similar to "status updates" on facebook) are limited to 140 characters.  Thus for MCO this means that we are using this at this time primarily as a news feed tool, sending links to newspaper articles that mention MCO or Corrections, or to draw your attention to new news coming out of MCO directly.  You can sign up to follow MCO by searching for "mcoreports".

The advantage of these new media tools is that they are accessible on many of today's cell phones, thus allowing you to stay informed without requiring you to be sitting at home in front of your computer.  MCO will continue to use e-mail and print to distribute news and information... we just want you to have the info you need when you need it and where you need it... wherever that may be!
